Q&A with Kam Patel – Commercial & Innovation Director, Gateley
Kam Patel will join us on Day 1, during our Private Practice Day. With a wealth of experience in the professional services sector, Kam has spearheaded operational teams and managed numerous business improvement projects, driving innovation across various functions. Known for his solution-oriented mindset, Kam excels in balancing the needs of operational teams with customer satisfaction.
He is particularly passionate about leveraging technology as an enabler to streamline and improve business processes. Drawing from his extensive background, Kam will share his insights with in-house attendees during the panel discussion on “Innovate or Integrate: Navigating the Build vs. Buy Conundrum in Legal Tech.” His wealth of experience will be invaluable for attendees looking to navigate the complexities of legal technology adoption.
How do you see the role of law firms evolving in response to the rapid technological changes in the legal industry? What trends do you predict will shape the future of legal services?
K: Law firms are evolving rapidly due to technological advancements like AI, automation, and cloud-based solutions. These technologies are helping to enhance client experiences, streamline routine tasks, and improve data availability. I believe the future of legal services will focus on integrating advanced tech, prioritizing client-centric solutions. Firms that adapt to these changes will thrive in the evolving legal landscape.
How do you think technology is impacting the career paths of lawyers, particularly with the rise of automation? What skills do you believe will be essential for lawyers in the next decade?
K: Technology, especially automation, is changing the way lawyers work, with the increasing possibility of automating routine tasks. This will allow lawyers to do what they love—focusing on delivering results for clients. This shift means they will need to get comfortable working with new and existing technology and build on their soft skills to foster better relationships with clients. These skills will be key to staying competitive in the evolving legal landscape.
What advice would you give to law firms that are just beginning to explore legal tech? How can they best assess and integrate these tools to enhance their practice without disrupting their existing workflows?
K: For law firms just starting to explore legal tech, my advice would be to begin with a clear understanding of how lawyers and their clients work. Identify areas where technology can add value to them, improve outcomes and streamline processes. It’s as much about winning hearts and minds as it is about the tech itself. Invest in training and support to ensure your team is comfortable with new tools and processes and choose solutions that make life as easy as possible for the end users.
