What sets Crimson apart from competitors, and how do you win over customers in a competitive market?

Crimson stands out in three ways:

First, we’re laser-focused on disputes. This means our AI is trained on contentious documents, it’s built with litigation and arbitration workflows in mind, and it understands the context of each case. Now that lawyers are increasingly familiar with general AI tools, more and more firms are looking for specialist solutions that are optimised for individual practice areas. Crimson is specifically designed to support disputes lawyers across the full lifecycle of a case.

Second, we have first-hand experience of the problem we’re solving. Commercial law is one of the hardest industries to understand from the outside. Particularly in disputes, there are so many processes, inefficiencies and pain points that are difficult to appreciate unless you’ve experienced them yourself. I spent nearly eight years working as a disputes lawyer at Clifford Chance, WilmerHale and Willkie, and this perspective informs everything we do.

Finally, we’ve made it as easy as possible for lawyers to try out Crimson. There are no set-up or onboarding fees, there is no minimum number of users, and there is no contractual lock-in. This approach gives our customers the greatest flexibility, and it ensures that Crimson keeps getting better based on lawyer feedback.

How do you measure customer success?

We track a few key metrics, including productivity gains, adoption and engagement. A typical junior to mid-level associate saves several hours each week with Crimson, and most of that time is non-billable or would have been written off. But we also look at qualitative factors, such as accuracy, completeness, and decreases in errors or omissions. One of the most important measures of customer success is the excitement and positive feedback we get from our end users, whether they’re lawyers, LPMs or paralegals. For them, the real benefit of Crimson is that they get to do more interesting work to a higher standard, which puts them in a better position to win cases.

What’s a standout feature that has surprised and delighted your customers the most? Any recent feedback that truly resonates with you?

We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how popular Crimson’s drafting assistant is. In our discovery interviews, lawyers who had previously experimented with general AI tools, such as firm-wide platforms, were sceptical about using AI to prepare disputes documents, e.g. letters, pleadings or submissions. They told us that existing tools often generated bland drafts that lacked detail and required heavy editing.

Crimson’s drafting assistant has access to the full case file, it adopts the user’s writing style, and it draws on this context to produce drafts that are tailored to the specific dispute. Most litigators generally enjoy drafting, but it’s always easier to edit and refine a solid first draft than to start with a blank sheet of paper. It’s been great to see users fully embrace Crimson’s drafting tool, whether it’s for a client email, a skeleton argument or a Redfern schedule.

Are there any exciting new feature releases on the horizon? When can users expect them, and how will they enhance the platform?

We’re working on novel ways to extract and visualise case information. Our aim is to make case data more accessible, drastically reduce the time it takes to review matter files, and help lawyers uncover insights that are often buried deep in the evidence. We’ll be sharing more on this soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Looking ahead, what is Crimson’s vision for the future—whether in terms of product innovation or market expansion?

AI has already changed some industries beyond recognition. Software developers, translators and copywriters can barely remember what life was like before large language models. We expect similarly seismic changes in the legal sector. Lawyers will soon see AI as an indispensable part of daily life – like Outlook or Word, but with far greater benefits for practitioners.

To unlock these benefits, lawyers don’t necessarily need more intelligent foundation models. Instead, the main barrier is workflow integration. AI tools will only have a major impact if they fit in with what lawyers do every day. Our vision is for Crimson to assist disputes lawyers with the full range of litigation and arbitration tasks. To achieve this, we’ll continue to add features that are tailored to disputes, so that lawyers get to spend more time doing what they love.
